Nascida em Thorton (Inglaterra), Anne Brontë (1820-1849), a mais nova das irmãs Brontë, escreveu esta obra ao mesmo tempo que as suas irmãs, Emily e Charlotte, trabalhavam nas suas (Wuthering Heights e The Professor, respectivamente).  A publicação de Agnes Grey apareceu em 1847, no mesmo volume que deu a conhecer também Wuthering Heights, de Emily Brontë, ambas c/ bom reconhecimento apenas póstumo.
